Elephant Revival & Mandolin Orange
Date: Sunday, September 18, 2016
Elephant Revival, the transcendental folk quintet from Colorado, returns to DCA with its vast repertoire of original folk pieces, traditional-style ballads, Celtic fiddle tunes, psychedelic country, indie rock, powerful reggae grooves, 1940s jazz standards, and an occasional hip-hop beat. Together, Elephant Revival creates “a unique and appealing modern acoustic sound simultaneously soaked in all manner of tradition” (Marquee Magazine). Elephant Revival will be joined at DCA by Mandolin Orange, a North Carolina bluegrass duo who make “honest music, shot through with coed harmonies, sweeping fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic guitar” (American Songwriter). Together, Mandolin Orange’s Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz enchant, bringing their deep understanding of traditional music to bear on their own timeless, heart-worn lyrical sensibilities.

Ensemble members also play a variety of traditional Tuvan instruments, creating an overall musical experience the Washington Post calls “absolutely stunning.”

In his young career, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and played in front of the Queen of England. His live concerts are an electrifying blend of instrumental virtuosity, deep musicality, and a natural entertainer’s flair. Over the past decade, Shimabukuro has become a one-man crusader for the ukulele cause, turning the four-string axe into a pliable musical vehicle. Strumming with a hummingbird-like blur, he coaxes an impossibly big sound out of the little instrument, generating everything from smooth pop to lilting originals, crunching rock to sensuous jazz.
