On Saturday, February 21, Door Community Auditorium will offer an escape from the cold with an invigorating lecture about Buddhism in Sri Lanka (9 a.m.) and a concert of toe-tapping music from the Door County Pickers (7 p.m.)
Distinguished Lecture Series: Buddhism in Sri Lanka—A Philosophical and Cultural Tour
On Saturday, February 21 at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Buddhism in Sri Lanka—A Philosophical and Cultural Tour,” presented by St. Norbert College associate professor of philosophy John Holder.
In his lecture, Holder will explore the Buddhist tradition as it is practiced in Sri Lanka. After an overview of basic Buddhist teachings, Holder will examine the specific ways that Sri Lankans express Buddhism through various rituals (such as pirit) and temple architecture at historical sites in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy.
Holder’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
Coffeehouse Concert: Door County Pickers
On Saturday, February 21 at 7 p.m., DCA will present a first-of-its-kind coffeehouse concert by the “Door County Pickers”. This evening of music will feature some of Door County’s most skilled and entertaining guitarists and singers, emceed by Elliot Goettelman of The Bent Elbows and The oFFseason.
In addition to Goettelman, the Door County Pickers concert will feature short sets by Terry Murphy (based in Waterford and Fish Creek), Charlie B (based in Fish Creek), Carley Baer (who splits her time between Wisconsin and Portland, Oregon), and Tarl Knight (based in Green Bay).
The Door County Pickers concert is sponsored by the Cordon Family Foundation. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase. Tickets are $15, general admission.
Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at the DCA box office, located on Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
