On January 30 and 31, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present the third weekend installment of its 2015 lecture, concert, and film series. After a Friday evening screening of the film Jens Jensen: The Living Green, DCA will present a Saturday morning lecture about human rights. Saturday evening will feature a concert of light-hearted, fun-loving music by frequent Door County performer Matt Wahl.
Movies at the Door: Jens Jensen: The Living Green
On Friday, January 30 at 7 p.m., DCA (in partnership with The Clearing Folk School) will present a free screening of the 2013 film Jens Jensen: The Living Green. The film tells the story of the life and legacy of Jens Jensen, the Danish-born landscape architect who designed countless parks, estates, campuses, and natural areas in the Midwest, including The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay. Jensen’s lifelong fight for the principle that all people deserved access to nature, regardless of their race or income, made him one of America’s most important and unsung environmental activists. The Clearing Executive Director Mike Schneider will be on hand for a question-and-answer session after the screening.
The film screening is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
Distinguished Lecture Series: Hopeful Realism—A Vision for Human Rights After 2014
On Saturday, January 31 at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Hopeful Realism—A Vision for Human Rights After 2014,” presented by St. Norbert College Senior Director of Engagement Dr. Robert Pyne.
Pyne will discuss the many human rights challenges the world faced in 2014, including the Ferguson riots, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Ebola epidemic, and the brutally violent rise of ISIS. In light of these recent events, Pyne will examine the future of human rights across the globe: Are we seeing the end of global human rights progress? On what basis might we expect a more hopeful future?
Pyne’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
Coffeehouse Concert: Matt Wahl
On Saturday, January 31 at 7 p.m., Matt Wahl will present a concert of “fun-loving, sunny-day music” in the DCA Fireside Lobby. Originally from Eau Claire, Wahl is now based in Duluth, MN and has become a Door County favorite through his regular performances on the peninsula. Wahl sings; plays acoustic guitar, ukulele, and harmonica; and writes songs and tells stories that lift audience’s spirits and leave them singing along.
“It’s about remembering what’s important,” says Wahl of his music. “Staying a kid at heart, laughing a lot and making it a point to look at the world in a way that feels good. It’s like when you’re feeling great with a fun, sunny attitude but you didn’t have to run off to Key West or the Caribbean to get that way!”
Tickets to the concert are $15, general admission. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase. The concert is sponsored by the Cordon Family Foundation; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites.
Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at the DCA box office, located on Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
