Mavis Staples
It’s no wonder that the Chicago Tribune calls Mavis Staples an “American treasure.” For six decades, Staples has been a solid rock of American music, from the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s (Uncloudy Day), to her engaged protest music in the civil rights era (Freedom Highway), to a series of chart hits in the 1970s (I’ll Take You There, Respect Yourself). In a career packed with appearances alongside everyone from Martin Luther King, Jr., to Presidents Carter and Clinton, to Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd, Mavis Staples has blazed a rhythm and blues trail all her own, never relinquishing her gospel roots or her fiery spirit.

Los Lonely Boys* with Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers
– – – *IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – June 17, 2015 – – –
Door Community Auditorium received some sad news late this afternoon. The mother of The Los Lonely Boys passed away unexpectedly. They have ‘left their tour’ and are making their way back to Texas to be with family. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Garza family.
Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers are still coming to Door County and will be performing a full-length performance. If you are unfamiliar with Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers – they are fantastic! Well-known for the theme songs for King of the Hill and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Roger Clyne is frequently called the Bruce Springsteen of the southwest.
Door Community Auditorium staff members are phoning all ticket holders to discuss several options, but it is our hope that audience members will still join us for what is going to be a very special evening.
Tickets are still available and on-line sales at lowered prices will begin again tomorrow mid-day. The box office will open at 10 a.m. and may be reached at 920.868.2728.
The Los Lonely Boys’ thank you for your continued support and love. And ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Katie Dahl: CD Release Concert with Eric Lewis
Door County’s own Katie Dahl is a folk singer-songwriter whose career is quickly expanding beyond the peninsula where she makes her home. Known for her intelligent songwriting, rich alto, and engaging performance style, Katie Dahl has built a devoted fan following in Door County and beyond, singing original songs with a careful sense of craft and a strong sense of place. At DCA, Dahl will be joined by Eric Lewis, a multi-instrumentalist from Memphis and a Door County audience favorite, and local bassist Rich Higdon. Lewis’s fast-picking guitar will dovetail with Dahl’s sharp songwriting as the trio celebrates the release of Dahl’s new CD, Ordinary Band.

“Bolivia’s Economic Miracle under Evo Morales: Indigenous Identity and 21st Century Caudillismo”
Evo Morales was recently re-elected President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia for a 3rd term. During his tenure in office Bolivia’s economy grew by over 5% annually, the country balanced its budget, foreign debt significantly diminished, and Bolivia currently boasts higher foreign reserves than most countries in the world. Extreme poverty is down to 21% in 2013 from 38% in 2005. Bolivia is also among the seven Latin American countries with the lowest rate of inequality. What factors explain this dramatic turn for South America’s most impoverished country? First, Bolivia has enjoyed a combination of political stability and high prices for its commodities like no other time in its recent history. Second, Evo Morales, has engaged in effective macro-economic policies that have brought significant wealth to the country. These include taking ownership of Bolivia’s natural resources, working with the IMF and the World Bank on Bolivia’s terms, and promoting the private sector. Finally, the “re-founding” of Bolivia has ensured that the windfall emanating from these policies actually reaches the poor through a variety of social programs including bonuses for school children, pensions for the elderly, prenatal care for expectant mothers, etc.
