On January 22 and 23, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present the second installment of its 2016 Distinguished Lecture Series and Coffeehouse Concert series, as well as the first installment of its Movies at the Door film series. After a Friday evening screening of the film Finding Vivian Maier, DCA will offer a Saturday morning lecture about Wisconsin’s geologic history. Saturday evening will feature a concert by popular progressive folk trio Small Forest.
Movies at the Door: Finding Vivian Maier
On Friday, January 22, at 7 p.m., DCA will present a screening of Finding Vivian Maier, a 2013 film about the mysterious woman who’s now considered one of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century. Maier was a nanny who secretly took over 100,000 photos that went unseen during her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, amateur historian John Maloof has crusaded to put this prolific photographer in the history books. In the film, Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.
The screening of Finding Vivian Maier is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
Distinguished Lecture Series: Geologic Time: The Geology of Wisconsin and Related Thoughts
On Saturday, January 23, at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Geologic Time: The Geology of Wisconsin and Related Thoughts.” The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Tim P. Flood, a professor of geology at St. Norbert College whose research focuses on the geochemistry of volcanoes. Wisconsin has a remarkable and largely hidden geologic history that extends back more than 3 billion years, including mountain ranges, volcanoes, fossils, glaciers, earthquakes, and ore deposits. Dr. Flood will explore geologic time from this perspective and discuss how geology impacts us today and may impact us in the future.
Flood’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Coffee and treats from Base Camp Coffee Shop will also be available.
Coffeehouse Concert: Small Forest
On Saturday, January 23 at 7 p.m., DCA will present a concert in the intimate Fireside Lobby by popular Door County trio Small Forest. Small Forest is a progressive folk rock band featuring Jeanne Kuhns, Marybeth Mattson and Patrick Palmer. Mother/daughter songwriters Kuhns and Mattson sing soaring harmonies together on their own original music, which is influenced in part by their lives in Door County. Kuhns and Mattson’s compelling guitar stylings (along with an occasional djembe beat) are made all the richer by Patrick Palmer’s innovative bass lines and vocals. At DCA, Small Forest will be joined by special guest George Sawyn (lead guitar).
Tickets for the concert are $15, $10 for students (all seats are general admission). Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at the DCA box office, located on Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
Small Forest’s concert is sponsored by The Cordon Family Foundation. Coffee and treats from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
