Escarpment
A film by Roger J. Kuhns
What was it like in Door County 425 million years ago? What has gone on in the geologic and biologic past beneath our feet? What are the changes we’re experiencing now? What might the future hold for our land, water, environment and communities? “Escarpment” is the natural history story of Eastern Wisconsin and the Niagara Escarpment region of the Great Lakes. The film was shot on location along the entire length of the Niagara Escarpment, with a Door County focus. It is a fast-paced fun voyage through billions of years of Eastern Wisconsin natural history. The film reconstructs ecosystems that existed when the dolomitic rocks of the Niagara Escarpment were formed, considers if dinosaurs ever walked in Door County, follows the path of glaciers, and many other major events in our geologic journey. Locations around the world are featured to show what Door County was like in the past. Animated sequences are called upon to illustrate parts of the story. The film helps to inform, enlighten, and guide us towards being better stewards of the land. In the spirit of Discovery Channel and National Geographic films, geologist and sustainologist Roger Kuhns produced this film for all ages. Kuhns has worked on the Niagara Escarpment and Great Lakes geology and ecology during the course of his career.

Community Partner Event: Write On Door County hosts Poetry Workshops at DCA – WRITING THE SONG LYRIC
Date: Saturday, March 25, 2017
WRITING THE SONG LYRIC with Katie Dahl (DCA)
It has been said that in order to write a good song lyric, you set out to write a poem and then lower your standards. But the song lyric is a genre unto itself, requiring different skills and different points of emphasis than a poem does. What constitutes a good lyric? We’ll take a look at a couple of particularly masterful examples. Then, using pre-written rhythms and melodies, we will write our own lyrics. No musical expertise required.

Community Partner Event: Write On Door County hosts Poetry Workshops at DCA – A POETIC CONVERSATION
Date: Friday, March 24, 2017
A POETIC CONVERSATION with June Nirschl and Judy Roy (DCA)
The art of conversation has shrunk in recent years, technology and incensed exchanges having replaced the civility and beauty of language. Poetry is a way to begin to restore that gift and to enliven our human dialogue. This workshop will explore poetry as a conversation between two or more writers. Such conversation might take the form of thoughts on a given topic, questions and answers, or call and response (as in the musical tradition). We will examine the work of contemporary poets engaging in conversation and participants will have the opportunity to participate in collaborative writing.
Community Partner Event: Write On Door County presents Naomi Shihab Nye Reading
Date: Thursday, March 23, 2017
Write On, Door County is proud to present critically-acclaimed and internationally renowned poet Naomi Shihab Nye in a special appearance. Known for poetry that lends a fresh perspective to ordinary events, people, and objects, Nye has said that, for her, “the primary source of poetry has always been local life, random characters met on the streets, our own ancestry sifting down to us through small essential daily tasks.”
Naomi Shihab Nye grew up in Ferguson, Mo., Jerusalem, and San Antonio, Texas, where she continues to live. She has been a visiting writer in hundreds of schools and communities all over the world for 42 years, and has written or edited around 35 books including collections of poetry, novels for teens, picture books, essays, very short fictional stories, anthologies of poetry, etc. Some of her books, such as Sitti’s Secrets, Habibi, This Same Sky, and The Tree is Older than You Are: Poems & Paintings from Mexico (bilingual) have been in print more than 20 years.
As a children’s writer, Nye is acclaimed for her sensitivity and cultural awareness. Nye sees her writing for children as part of her larger goals as a writer. As Nye explained to a Children’s Literature Review contributor, “to counteract negative images conveyed by blazing headlines, writers must steadily transmit simple stories closer to heart and more common to everyday life. Then we will be doing our job.”

St. Norbert College Distinguished Lecture Series: The Global Trend of Female Political Leaders around the World: How does the U.S. Measure Up?
Featured St. Norbert’s College Lecturer: Dr. Young-Im Lee
Date: Saturday, March 4, 2017
As of April 2016, 112 women in 73 countries have been elected as presidents or prime ministers of their countries. Women assume 22.8% of the members of parliaments around the world, slightly higher than the share of women in the U.S. Congress. Surprising to many, more than 100 countries use gender quotas to nominate and elect women to the political office. What is the global trend of women’s political representation and how does the U.S. measure up against other countries? What explains the gender gap in politics and how to narrow it? More importantly, do women in politics make a difference?
