On February 27 and 28, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a lively weekend of film (the world premiere of Door County sci-fi flick The Emissary), lecture (about Bolivian economics), and music and poetry (“Words on Fire,” a lively coffeehouse collaboration by Door County poets and musicians).
Movies at the Door: The Emissary
On Friday, February 27 at 7 p.m., DCA will present the world premiere screening of the Door County sci-fi adventure The Emissary. Directed by Timothy Erskine, The Emissary tells the story of a spaceman who lands his ship in Newport State Park while a local resident is taking a meditation walk. The two men join forces to disarm an alien power generator before it blows up Door County. Shot on location at locations throughout the Door peninsula, The Emissary is fun and appropriate for the entire family.
Tickets to The Emissary cost $5 per person. A portion of the night’s proceeds will benefit Friends of Gibraltar, Door County Humane Society, and Door County YMCA. The screening is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik.
Distinguished Lecture Series: Bolivia’s Economic Miracle under Evo Morales
On Saturday, February 28 at 9 a.m., DCA will offer a lecture entitled “Bolivia’s Economic Miracle under Evo Morales: Indigenous Identity and 21st Century Caudillismo,” presented by St. Norbert College associate professor of political science Dr. Gratzia Villarroel.
In the lecture, Villarroel will examine the many ways in which Bolivian president Evo Morales has reinvigorated Bolivia’s economy, including taking ownership of Bolivia’s natural resources and promoting the private sector. She will also discuss the ways in which Morales has ensured that the windfall emanating from these policies actually reaches the poor through a variety of social programs including bonuses for school children, pensions for the elderly, and prenatal care for expectant mothers.
Villaroel’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
