Rockapella Christmas

November 26, 2016 by Backstage Leave a Comment

rockapella-eventDate: Saturday, November 26, 2016

Since the early ’90s when they first achieved national television fame on PBS’s Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?, a cappella icons Rockapella have provided a funky, powerful soundtrack to several generations of vocal music fans, touring the globe and always keeping their music fresh along the way. With buckets of catchy original pop songs, as well as complete contemporary revisions of sparkling Motown, pop, and soul classics, this five-man ensemble can create the sound of a full band using only the versatility of their voices. As USA Today proclaimed: “The best musical instrument of all is the human voice – if you’ve seen Rockapella you know that’s the truth.”

charlie-north-eventCharlie Musselwhite & North Mississippi AllStars

Date: Saturday, November 5, 2016

Blues harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. After cutting his musical teeth in the early ’60s alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and other Chicago blues greats, Musselwhite is still going strong, riveting audiences with a voice and harp tone like no other.

Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson grew up soaking in the music of their father, Memphis legend Jim Dickinson, absorbing north Mississippi’s musical legacy through nights at the local juke joints. In 1996, Luther (guitar, vocals) and Cody (drums, vocals) decided to use this musical background as the foundation for a new band, and the North Mississippi Allstars were born, pioneering their own brand of blues-infused rock and roll.

October 22, 2016 by Backstage Leave a Comment

del-dawg-eventDate: Saturday, October 22, 2016

For hard-core bluegrass fans, guitarist/bandleader Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for more than five decades. Mandolinist, composer, and bandleader David “Dawg” Grisman has also long been a guiding force in the world of acoustic music, skillfully combining elements of jazz and bluegrass with international flavors and sensibilities to create his own distinctive idiom. McCoury met Grisman at the first show Del ever played, in Greenwich Village in 1963, and the two formed a deep musical bond. At DCA, “Del & Dawg” will celebrate the half-century of bluegrass friendship that these two legendary musicians have shared.
