On February 26 and 27, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a lively weekend of film (a screening of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), lecture (about African-American Settlement in 19th-century Wisconsin), and music and poetry (“Words on Fire,” a lively coffeehouse collaboration by Door County poets and musicians).
Movies at the Door: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
On Friday, February 26 at 7 p.m., DCA will present a screening of the wildly popular 2001 film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This marks the first of three consecutive Friday Lord of the Rings screenings, in which DCA presents the all three parts of director Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic science fiction trilogy.
In Part 1, The Fellowship of the Ring, Elijah Wood stars as Frodo Baggins, a hobbit resident of a land called “Middle-earth.” Early on, Frodo discovers that a ring bequeathed to him is in fact the “One Ring,” a device that will allow its master to manipulate dark powers and enslave the world. Frodo is charged by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to return the ring to Mount Doom, the evil site where it was forged millennia ago and the only place where it can be destroyed.
The screening of The Fellowship of the Ring is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
Distinguished Lecture Series: African-American Settlement in 19th-Century Northeast Wisconsin
On Saturday, February 27 at 9 a.m., DCA will offer a lecture entitled “African-American Settlement in 19th-Century Northeast Wisconsin,” presented by St. Norbert College professor of history Dr. Victoria Tashjian. Tashjian will discuss the African-American presence that has been continuous in Wisconsin since shortly after the arrival of French fur traders—a history that is often forgotten. She will also address a near-lost strand of local history, drawing upon surprisingly rich sources of information available in area archives.
Tashjian’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
