Professional theater troupe Mad River Theater Works, based in rural Ohio, creates evocative original musical plays with a rich sense of place. The troupe’s productions, many of which are based on American history and folklore, have earned a reputation as authentic presentations that reflect the rich diversity of the country’s common heritage. At DCA, the company will present “Freedom Riders,” which tells the story of the black and white Americans who defied segregation in 1961, traveling together on buses that crossed state lines in order to protest the bus segregation practices that were still commonplace in so many parts of the United States.

Fireside Coffeehouse Concert: Deathfolk

January 27, 2018 by DCA_Backstage Leave a Comment

Date: Saturday, January 27, 2018

Sturgeon Bay duo Deathfolk is made up of Jess Holland and Nick Hoover. Initially brought together by their mutual love of sad songs and murder ballads, Holland and Hoover’s collaboration plumbs those “deathfolk” roots as well as striking out into the territory of thoughtful Americana music. Deathfolk’s compelling songs — featuring banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, and impossibly tight harmonies — explore themes of love, loss, and a deep appreciation of the natural world. The duo recently completed work on their self-titled debut album, financed in part by a successful crowdfunding campaign.

January 26, 2018 by DCA_Backstage Leave a Comment

Date: Friday, January 26, 2018

Pelé is known around the world—he’s a national hero in Brazil, and he’s an international sports legend who changed the game of soccer forever. But before he was an icon, he was a kid from the slums of São Paulo, so poor that he couldn’t afford a real soccer ball. This biographical drama chronicles Pelé’s meteoric rise from scrubbing floors to support his family, to honing his electrifying playing style on the streets, to leading Brazil’s national team to its first World Cup victory in 1958, when Pelé was just 17 years old. Featuring Vincent D’Onofrio and Brazilian musical star Seu Jorge.

Recycled Percussion

January 23, 2018 by DCA_Backstage Leave a Comment

Date: Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Since Justin Spencer formed Recycled Percussion in 1995—to perform in a high school talent show in New Hampshire—the four-man band has become a national phenomenon. They call their music “junk rock,” and they create it by turning ladders, buckets, trash cans, car parts, vacuums, and power tools into percussion instruments. Recycled Percussion first gained national attention after appearances in “USA Today” and on “America’s Got Talent.” In addition to playing thousands of shows in over 15 countries, this unlikely quartet has also made guest appearances on “Carson Daly,” “The Today Show,” “China’s Got Talent,” and the Latin Grammy Awards.

Fireside Coffeehouse Concert: Dead Horses

January 13, 2018 by DCA_Backstage Leave a Comment

Date: Saturday, January 13, 2018

Milwaukee-based folk band Dead Horses have cultivated a soulful roots sensibility based around the powerful literary and musical force of frontwoman/songwriter Sarah Vos. Raised on Bible hymns by her preacher father, Vos’ backstory sounds more like that of an old Mississippi bluesman than a young Wisconsin folksinger. Despite their youth, Vos and her collaborator, bassist Daniel Wolff, have crafted a timeless sound that’s informed as much by early American prose as it is by modern Americana music. Named a “Wisconsin Band To Watch” by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Dead Horses tour tirelessly, performing with bands like Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival. Dead Horses swept the 2017 WAMI Awards, taking home “Best Americana/Bluegrass Artist,” “Best Female Vocalist,” and “Best Album of the Year” for their September 2016 release “Cartoon Moon.”

Inspired by the life and legacy of Bo Johnson, a young Sister Bay resident who died in 2012, “Play It Forward” does just what its name suggests: participating musicians donate their time, and proceeds from the evening go to benefit a worthy cause—this year, hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Play it Forward is an evening that celebrates the best of Door County: community, generosity, and good music.
